Ikkyū’s Motto


imageThe import of Ikkyū’s motto is that anyone can be saintly in refined conditions, but the real challenge is to achieve enlightenment in the midst of the world’s suffering, greed and hatred.

Ikkyu (1394-1481) was renowned for pointing out the hypocrisy of institutional Buddhism as well as a renowned poet.
